Extended Producer Responsibility Reminder

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for Packaging is a regulation that many suppliers of goods in the UK need to abide by, making them financially responsible for the end-of-life management of their packaging. The EPR scheme came into effect partially in 2023. This year will be the first year both small and large producers will have to report data to the environmental regulators within the UK.

What are the different type of producers?

Under EPR there are two different types of producers, large and small. A business is classified as a large producer if they have a turnover of more than £2 million and handle more than 50 tonnes of packaging per year. A small producer has a turnover of more than £1 million but less than £2 million that handles less than 50 tonnes+ packaging or has a turnover of more than £ 2million but only handles between 25-50 tonnes of packaging. Companies who do not fit in any of these categories are not obligated to report their packaging.

EPR in 2026

The UK’s EPR scheme is eco-modulated meaning lower fees for higher sustainable packaging.
2026 is an important year for the EPR reporting in the UK. The 1st April is the first reporting deadline for small producers, with it being the second for large producers who first had to report in October 2025. This key date will be a turning point in the EPR scheme with all companies becoming liable to report 100% accurate figures.
